The discussion on living an authentic life continues. This week in part four of Authenticity, we are going to talk about Covert Contracts.
Breaking free from the nice guy syndrome means challenging every one of your adult and childhood paradigms about who you are and how you fit into the world. And for nice guys, that usually means that belief system that we developed in childhood that I’m not okay, just as I am. There’s something fundamentally wrong with me.
This belief has led to the nice guy covert contracts that I have to become what I think others want me to be in order to be loved and liked, get my needs met, and have a smooth life. Nice guys also believe they have to hide whatever there is about them that might make other people angry, disapproving, or lead to conflict.
We’re going to wrap up this four-part series of discussions by looking at how we can become aware of our covert contracts. As we do this, we’ll also talk a little bit about self-soothing, because nice guy syndrome is an anxiety-based disorder. So learning to soothe ourselves is essential for us to become more authentic and acting in authentic ways.
